It's Okay to Say "Fat Loss"
Confession Time. As a women’s health coach - I’ve realized something pretty significant. I’ve shied away from saying the words fat loss. Even typing that here makes me pause.
For years, I avoided those two words out of fear:
Fear that people would think I was just another “diet culture” coach.
Fear that women would feel judged, shamed or triggered.
Fear of being misunderstood and reducing health down to just a number on the scale.
And if I’m being really transparent, I carried my own baggage around the phrase too. Like many women, I grew up in a world where weight loss was glorified, restriction was celebrated and “skinny” was praised as the ultimate goal. I know the harm that kind of messaging can do. I’ve lived it and every day - I’m still working through the ways diet culture really effed up my brain.
So, when I stepped into coaching more - I said to myself: I don’t want to be the coach that focuses most on fat loss. But here’s where I’ve had to face eve more: avoiding the conversation about fat loss isn’t serving women either.
When I think back to my own story - after having my fourth baby at the end of 2019, I entered a season of life that completely shook me. I thought I knew what to expect after going through 3 pregnancies and postpartum journeys before. But this time was different. My body felt so foreign. So unglued. My energy was gone. My mood was low. I was anxious, isolated and nothing in my usual “health toolbox” was working.
It wasn’t just about weight in that season. It was the way my body was holding onto fat differently, the exhaustion I couldn’t shake, the belly that felt “stuck” and the hormones that seemed to be working against me. My mental health suffered the most and I didn’t know what to do to press forward.
That personal struggle cracked me open. And it gave me the clarity and compassion I bring into my work today. I am constantly working to learn, grow, evolve, be better and SIMPLIFY the journey for all of us. And get HONEST about the harder topics that seem to feel heavier to unpack.
Fat Loss is one of them.
So here’s what I’ve learned through both my personal journey and my work with clients:
carrying excess body fat isn’t just about appearance. It’s about longevity health.
Especially as we move into our 30s, 40s, and beyond as women. Excessive fat mass - particularly around the belly - has serious health consequences like…
Increasing the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
Putting strain on the heart and raising blood pressure
Creating chronic inflammation that leads to overall cellular dysfunction
Disrupting hormones, mood, and sleep
Even impacting long-term brain health
So yes - while feeling better in our clothes or putting on our favorite pair of jeans with ease are great goals - the story has to go deeper. In the end, this is about protecting our bodies from disease, preserving our energy and paving our longevity path to a healthy, fulfilling life.
When we intentionally focus on losing fat mass (not just “losing weight”), while preserving and building muscle, the benefits ripple into every corner of our lives:
✨ Higher energy and motivation
✨ More stable moods and cycles
✨ Lower disease risk
✨ Sharper mental clarity
✨ Greater confidence and quality of life
