Seeing Weight Gain? Your Metabolism Isn't Broken. Your Habits Are.
If you're a woman in perimenopause, over 35 or 40, who's convinced your metabolism has completely stopped working - I have some good news and some bad news for you…
The GOOD news? Your metabolism probably isn't broken.
The BAD news? Some of the habits you've been repeating for YEARS might be contributing to the very symptoms you're trying so hard to fix.
And before you assume I'm about to tell you to eat less and exercise more, hear me out.
I'm talking about the patterns that quietly add up over time. Skipping meals and running on coffee. Under-eating all day and overeating at night. Not getting enough protein. Prioritizing cardio over strength training. Sleeping five or six hours and calling it fine. Living in a constant state of stress. Sitting most of the day. Cutting carbs because someone told you to. Drinking more alcohol than your body comfortably tolerates. And starting over every Monday instead of building consistency.
These are the exact habits that send signals to your brain, hormones, nervous system and metabolism every single day. And in midlife, when your physiology is already changing, those patterns are harder to interpret and cannot be ignored.
I Know Because I've Been There.
For most of my life, I was an athlete. I grew up swimming, playing soccer and lacrosse and staying incredibly active. When I wanted to change something about my body, I knew what to do. Eat a little less, exercise a little more and the results would follow. Until they didn't.
After having my fourth baby, navigating significant postpartum anxiety and depression, raising a child with complex medical needs and spending what felt like years in survival mode - my body started changing in ways I didn't recognize.
I gained nearly 40 pounds. I was exhausted, moody, defeated and struggling to feel like myself.
What I eventually realized was that my body wasn't broken. I was just trying to support a completely different season of life with the same strategies I'd used in my 20s. So here’s where learning about metabolism and metabolic health comes into play…
Your metabolism is an incredibly complex system responsible for converting food into energy, regulating blood sugar, maintaining muscle, repairing tissues and supporting countless processes that keep you functioning. And it's constantly responding to your physiology, environment and daily behaviors.
During perimenopause (or really anytime from 35 and beyond!), fluctuating estrogen and progesterone will start to influence sleep, mood, body composition and metabolic health. And at the same time, aging, changes in activity and declining muscle mass will also affect how your body uses energy.
Now add chronic stress, inadequate sleep, inconsistent nourishment and years of pushing through exhaustion…can you see why what worked at 28 might not work at 42?
It's not necessarily that your metabolism has stopped working.
It's that your physiology and circumstances have changed, but your strategy hasn't.
And while metabolic adaptation is a real thing, particularly with prolonged calorie restriction and weight loss, it doesn't explain every midlife symptom or mean your metabolism is permanently damaged.
For me - when I stopped focusing on what I needed to REMOVE or do MORE of and started asking what my body actually needed, things began to change. I shifted from excessive cardio to prioritizing strength training and daily movement. I stopped constantly restricting food and started focusing on adequate protein, fiber, and balanced meals. I began taking my sleep, nervous system, mental health and recovery seriously.
And I started looking at my health as an interconnected system rather than chasing individual symptoms.
Over time, I lost the weight. But more importantly, I started feeling like myself again.
Not because I found some magical supplement or perfect diet.
Because I stopped fighting my physiology and started working WITH it.
And that's what I want women in perimenopause to understand…
You cannot control every hormonal fluctuation, eliminate every stressor or stop the aging process. But you CAN influence the habits that support your metabolic health. All by doing things like nourishing your body consistently, building muscle, prioritizing sleep, moving more throughout the day, managing stress and stopping the extremes.
And when symptoms persist, you can advocate for appropriate testing and evaluations instead of assuming everything is simply part of getting older.
Overall - this isn't about perfection or adding MORE to your already overflowing plate. It's about recognizing what actually moves the needle and creating a strategy that works for YOUR body and YOUR life.
So while the good news is - your metabolism probably isn't broken. And the bad news is - some of your habits might be working against you…
The BEST news is - you have the ability to change those patterns.
Perimenopause doesn't have to be the beginning of your body's decline.
It can be the beginning of your next leve, your wake-up call, your opportunity to level up and step into a much more informed, intentional and EMPOWERED relationship with your health.
That’s exactly what I help women do inside The EMPOWER Method. We stop guessing, look at the bigger picture and create personalized strategies that work WITH your physiology instead of against it.
