Want to Lose Weight? Here Are 10 Questions I'll Ask You First...
When most women think about weight loss, they assume the conversation is going to start with calories, macros, meal plans or what foods they should stop eating.
As a functional health coach, that's rarely where I begin.
Why? Because after working with hundreds of women, I've learned that weight loss is almost never just about food. It's about the entire picture of how someone is living, recovering, managing stress, fueling their body and showing up for themselves each day.
The reality is that you can have the perfect nutrition plan on paper, but if you're exhausted, overwhelmed, stressed, sleeping poorly and disconnected from your body's needs, progress will often feel frustratingly slow. That's why before we jump into weight loss, I want to understand the foundation first…
Here’s what matters (and what I’ll ask about!):
1. What Does Sleep Look Like?
Sleep is one of the first things I ask about because it's one of the most powerful drivers of health and body composition. If you're getting five or six hours of sleep, waking multiple times throughout the night, or relying on caffeine just to function, your body is likely struggling to recover. Poor sleep impacts hunger hormones, cravings, blood sugar regulation, cortisol levels, recovery, energy and motivation.
Many women are trying to lose weight while running on empty, and no amount of willpower can outwork chronic exhaustion.
2. What Does Stress Look Like?
Most women immediately think of work stress when I ask this question, but stress is so much bigger than that. Stress can come from:
Busy schedules
Raising children
Caring for aging parents
Financial pressures
Relationship challenges
Overcommitting
Lack of boundaries
Your body doesn't differentiate between physical stress and emotional stress. To your nervous system, it's all stress. When your body is constantly in survival mode, fat loss often becomes much more difficult because your system is focused on protection rather than optimization.
3. What Does Digestion Look Like?
Yes, I ask about poop. A lot. Because your digestion tells a story. If you're constantly bloated, constipated, experiencing loose stools, struggling with gas or feeling uncomfortable after meals, those symptoms matter. Healthy digestion plays a huge role in nutrient absorption, detoxification, inflammation, hormone balance, and overall metabolic health.
Many women are surprised to learn that digestive health can directly impact how they feel, function and even how easily they lose weight.
4. What Does Caffeine Look Like?
Coffee isn't the enemy. But sometimes caffeine becomes a mask for deeper issues. I want to know how much you're drinking, when you're drinking it and whether you're using it to compensate for poor sleep or low energy. Many women are unintentionally creating a cycle where caffeine supports them through the day, but also contributes to disrupted sleep and increased stress on the back end.
The goal isn't necessarily to eliminate caffeine. It's to understand the role it's playing in your life.
5. What Does Sugar Look Like?
When I ask about sugar, I'm not looking for perfection. I'm looking for patterns.
Do you crave sweets every afternoon?
Do you feel out of control around desserts?
Do you constantly need something sweet after meals?
These patterns can provide important clues about blood sugar stability, protein intake, stress levels, sleep quality and overall metabolic health. Often the craving isn't the problem - it's a signal that something underneath needs attention.
6. What Does Your Morning Routine Look Like?
How we start our day matters. Many women wake up already behind, immediately grab their phones, rush through the morning, skip breakfast, and begin operating in reactive mode before their feet even hit the floor.
I want to know if you're creating space for simple habits like:
Hydration
Morning sunlight
Movement
Protein
A few moments of quiet
Small actions performed consistently often create massive results over time.
7. What Does Your Evening Routine Look Like?
Just as important as how you start your day is how you end it. Your evening routine sets the stage for sleep, recovery, and tomorrow's energy levels. I often ask about:
Bedtime consistency
Screen time
Alcohol intake
Evening snacking
Wind-down routines
Most women underestimate how much better they can feel when they simply create a little more intention around their evenings.
8. What Does Energy Look Like?
Energy is one of my favorite health metrics because it tells us so much.
Are you energized throughout the day or constantly dragging yourself from one responsibility to the next?
Do you hit a wall every afternoon?
Are you relying on caffeine, sugar or sheer determination to keep going?
Your energy gives us insight into hormones, blood sugar, recovery, stress, nutrition and overall health. Before focusing on weight loss, I want to understand why your energy may be struggling.
9. What Does Talking to Yourself Sound Like?
This question often catches women off guard. But it may be one of the most important questions I ask.
Many women speak to themselves with a level of criticism they would never direct toward a friend. They've spent years believing they're lazy, broken, undisciplined, or failing because they haven't reached a certain weight.
The truth is that lasting transformation isn't built on shame. It's built on awareness, compassion, and learning to work with your body instead of constantly fighting against it.
10. What Does Losing Weight Actually Mean to You?
This is usually where the conversation gets interesting. Because most women don't actually want to lose weight. They want what they believe weight loss will give them. They want more confidence. More energy. Better health. Freedom in their clothes. The ability to keep up with their kids. A stronger relationship with themselves. A sense of vitality and possibility again.
When we uncover the deeper reason behind the goal, we stop focusing solely on a number and start building a life that supports the outcome they truly desire.
One of the biggest hurdles in today's health space (especially for women!) is that weight loss has been reduced to a simple equation. Just Eat Less. And Move More.
But real life isn't that simple.
Real life involves hormones, stress, sleep, digestion, relationships, mindset, recovery, responsibilities, emotions, habits and the season of life you're currently navigating. That's why when someone comes to me wanting to lose weight, I don't immediately ask how many calories they're eating.
I want to know how you’re living.
Because lasting results come from addressing the whole person, not just the number on the scale.
The truth is that weight loss has far less to do with perfection than most people think. It has everything to do with understanding your body, supporting your foundations and creating sustainable habits that allow your health to thrive for years to come.
